Daniel A. Cullen

My main source of inspiration is undoubtedly childhood experience. My intuitive sensual response to materials, shapes, colours, textures and symbols come from this deep reservoir of experience. For me the creative process involves retracing steps, tapping into sensitivities some times long neglected, gently teasing out wonder and fascination, then protecting and following it like a seam of precious metal or a scent. This remembering of childhood is a process of dialogue, acknowledgement and honouring. It is a dialogue between the conscious and unconscious self, articulated through the medium of clay.

Spiritual and religious experience is deeply embedded in my work. My work like many artists before me refers to traditional iconic imagery both religious and non-religious. Through working with this imagery I am affirmed of its continued contemporary relevance.
